1933 R306 Butter Cream Confectionery Collection (12)

Sold For: $2,644
Year: 1933
Auction: 2009 Spring
Lot #: 7
Auction: Prewar Baseball - 1930s and 1940s Cards
Presented is a collection of twelve R306 Butter Cream cards, including nine Hall of Famers, each graded and encapsulated by SGC. These twelve cards are the balance of the R306 collection that accompanied the newly discovered R306 Butter Cream of Babe Ruth! The collection was consigned by a gentleman from New England who was given these cards as a gift by a family friend as a youngster. When he happened to see an illustrated newspaper story about the sale of the R306 Ruth in the May 2008 REA auction, he immediately recognized the R306 Ruth as being from the same set as the small group of cards he had been given long ago. The Babe Ruth card, naturally, was the highlight card of the find, and is offered separately in this auction as its own lot. The balance of the collection is very substantial in its own right and is offered in its entirety in this lot. We have presented all twelve cards to SGC for grading and encapsulation. The SGC grades are as follows: Two EX 60: Lyons (HOF) and Rommel. Ten Authentic: Averill (HOF), Cronin (HOF), Foxx (HOF), Grove (HOF), Hartnett (HOF), Klein (HOF), Kremer, Lindstrom (HOF), P. Waner (HOF), and Wright. These ten cards could not be numerically graded, but have been deemed "Authentic" by SGC. Each is a very attractive card with an approximately Excellent appearance (Averill slightly lesser), but has not been given a numerical grade due to the fact that according to SGC it appears that these ten cards (like the Ruth) were not machine cut, but were perhaps more likely cut from a sheet in a different manner. For many of these ten cards, the unusual quality of the cut is not apparent, especially when viewed in an SGC holder. On some of the cards, however (especially Joe Cronin, for example), the unusual cut is clearly apparent. A few of the ten "Auth" cards, upon very close examination, have the slightest, barely detectable hint of clear glue residue on the reverse from scrapbook removal (the additional two SGC EX 60 cards do not have this). This is a very unusual and fascinating find of these extremely distinctive cards, and a unique opportunity to acquire twelve different cards from one of the rarest of all 1930-era issues. Total 12 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,644
