Exceedingly rare and extraordinary Boston Red Sox pennant dating from the club's 1915 World Championship season. This is not only one of the most elusive of all Boston Red Sox pennants issued during the club's 1912-1918 dynasty, but the most attractive as well. This particular example is in virtually unheard of astounding high grade. It would be hard to imagine that this is not by far the finest example in existence. The fact that it also commemorates Babe Ruth's first full season in the Major Leagues only adds to its appeal. This is just the second 1915 Boston Red Sox pennant of this style we have ever seen and the first we have ever offered. The oversized red-and-white felt pennant (35 inches long) features a generic Red Sox batter on the left, with the surrounding white lettering reading "American League Champions 1915." The team name "Red Sox," lettered in Old English, is displayed to the right in red, bordered on either side by two crossed "red socks." It is interesting to note that the design of this pennant is nearly identical to that of the 1916 championship pennant. The only differences between the two are the year and the fact that the 1916 pennant does not include the two pairs of crossed "red socks" on either side of the team name. Since the pennant refers to the club as American League Champions and not World Champions, it seems almost certain that it was specially produced for sale at the 1915 World Series. This is one of the most beautiful pennants ever produced and one that would be a premier display piece in even the most advanced baseball-memorabilia collection. Its aesthetic appeal notwithstanding, as previously noted, the offered example is further distinguished by its remarkable state of preservation. Aside from a small chip of paint to one of the crossed "red socks" and three minute tack holes (each end and tip; very unobtrusive), the pennant boasts an extraordinary Near Mint appearance, and by any measure it represents one of the (if not the) finest Boston Red Sox pennants extant dating from the early 1900s. Mounted (by means of plastic holders; the pennant can be easily removed if so desired) and framed to total dimensions of 51 x 21 inches (at the widest points). Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open).
