Graded NM 84 by SGC (submitted by REA). This is the ONLY example graded by SGC at this level with just two higher! Presented is an exceptional ultra high-grade example of Hall of Famer Walter Johnson (Washington Senators) from the T204 Ramly set, one of the most popular of all 1910-era tobacco issues. This is one of tobacco-card collecting's great classics. One of Walter Johnson's rarest cards, it is also universally recognized as the key card from the Ramly Tobacco set. Ramlys, which are highly prized among collectors for their distinctive style and rarity, are among the most condition-sensitive sets in existence, with fragile gold borders easily susceptible to chipping. The offered example is one of the finest in the entire collecting world. Four sharp corners, virtually flawless gold borders, and near-perfect centering. Crisp and clean, both front and back. Striking portrait image. This card originates from an extremely advanced, old-time collection, which was comprised of cards dating from the 1880s to the 1970s, with a particularly high concentration of, and focus on, Ramlys. T204 Ramlys were our consignor's favorite set and the one he spent the most time collecting, always searching for the highest-grade examples he could find (and even picking up duplicates if they were in sufficiently high grade because "one can never have too much of a good thing!"). His impressive collection (assembled over a period of decades!) included three T204 Johnsons: the SGC MINT 96 and EX/NM 80 examples offered in the Spring 2014 auction and this beautiful NM card. This is an extraordinarily attractive example, offered in a much higher grade than normally encountered, of the key card from one of tobacco-card collecting's most highly respected and beautifully designed sets. This card would be an extremely significant highlight in any world-class T204 Ramly, Walter Johnson, or classic-card collection. Reserve $10,000. Estimate $20,000+.
