Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA. This is a remarkable ultra high-grade example of Detroit Tigers Hall of Famer Ty Cobb (bat on shoulder variation) from the legendary T206 White Border set. In addition to its incredible high grade, the offered card is even more noteworthy for its desirable Sovereign 150 advertising reverse. Sovereign is a scarce back, certainly not in the same league as Drum or Uzit, but very unusual and seen far less often than the standard Piedmont or Sweet Caporal advertising backs. Of the 767 examples (with any back) graded to date by PSA, only twelve examples have ever been graded at this level, with none higher! Only two of those twelve examples, including the offered card, feature a Sovereign back. It is hard to imagine a finer example of a T206 Cobb! This card is bright and clean, both front and back, with perfect registration, flawless colors, and four sharp corners. The centering is superb for this card, measuring approximately 50/50 all around. The important advertising reverse features bold green print and is centered very slightly to the left. The T206 set is the most popular and widely collected prewar-card set in the hobby. Cards of Ty Cobb from the set, of which there are four, are among the most recognizable of all vintage cards, and they are on almost every single list compiling the greatest cards ever issued, including PSA's Top 250 Sportscards in the Hobby set, based on the book Collecting Sports Legends: The Ultimate Hobby Guide, by Joe Orlando, which selects the most significant cards from all the different sports. Collectors are beginning to appreciate how scarce superb high-grade examples really are, with cards in the extreme high grades, such as this, realizing exceptionally strong prices recently. There is good reason for it: T206 Cobbs are never going out of style with collectors, and they are among the safest stores of value and most recognizable cards available to new collectors. This is a world-class example of one of Ty Cobb's most highly prized baseball cards and one that would be a worthy addition to even the most advanced collection. Reserve $10,000. Estimate (open).
