Graded GOOD 2 by PSA. Presented is a virtually impossible example of one of collecting's most important cards: Babe Ruth's rookie card issued by the Standard Biscuit Company of San Francisco! The image presented on this card, of an extremely trim Babe Ruth as a pitcher for the Red Sox years before he became the game's greatest slugger, is instantly recognizable as one of card collecting's most famous. Standard Biscuit Company cards are very similar to M101-4 and M101-5 Sporting News. Perhaps because they were issued by a bakery company, Jefferson Burdick elected to give this M101-4/5 related issue its own catalog number. D350-1 Standard Biscuits are much rarer than most related issues. To put the rarity of this particular advertising back in perspective, in the entire history of PSA, a total of only sixty M101-4/5 examples with Standard Biscuit Company advertising backs (of which only two are Ruth cards) have been graded. Standard Biscuit cards (as well as M101-4/5s) have a glossy coated surface, which is very susceptible to creasing. This is an extremely attractive example in all respects! The image is bright and crisp, and the contrast is flawless. Centered to the right, with natural rounding to the corners, a crease across the top portion of the card, and a couple spots of paper loss on the reverse (does not disrupt the printed text) that account for the modest assigned grade. The reverse advertisement for Standard Biscuit Company is bold and crisp. Over the past several decades, there has been an ever-increasing appreciation for this card of Ruth from the classic M101-4/5 related sets. Ruth's rookie is one that transcends the world of card collecting. This is an extremely striking example of one of the most highly prized of all Babe Ruth cards featuring an ultra-rare back advertisement from one of the most important baseball-card issues of the era. A worthy addition to even the most advanced Babe Ruth, Hall of Fame, or type-card collection! Reserve $25,000. Estimate (open).
