1948-1949 Leaf #8 Satchel Paige Rookie Short Print PSA NM 7

Sold For: $75,000
Year: 1948
Auction: 2019 Fall
Lot #: 10
Auction: Postwar Baseball - 1950s Cards
Graded NM 7 by PSA. Of the 165 examples graded by PSA to date, only five have been graded higher. Offered is an extremely attractive high-grade example of 1948-1949 Leaf #8 Satchel Paige. This is one of card collecting's most iconic classics. Satchel Paige’s Leaf rookie card is universally recognized as one of the scarcest and most significant of all postwar baseball cards. Chicago's Leaf Gum Company produced the first multicolor baseball cards of the post-World War II era in 1948-1949. Forty-nine cards in the set are considered "standard," and the additional "short print" series of forty-nine cards in the set are so rare that "Rare Leafs" has long been a formal card-collecting hobby term. Leafs are without question one of the toughest postwar sets to complete because of all the rare cards. Paige is not only the key to this rare series, he is also the key to the 1948-1949 Leaf set. The Leaf card is also Paige’s most valuable. This is an outstanding high-grade example. The offered example is bright and clean, with exceptional registration (which can be a problem with Leafs), and outstanding centering (centering issues are very common with this series). The back is perfectly clean, centered to the lower left, with text flawlessly crisp and bold. This iconic card is rarely offered in any condition, in fact, this is only the fourteenth example we have ever offered in the last sixteen years. This card presents a rare opportunity to acquire an extremely attractive and high-grade example of one of the most classic of all postwar baseball cards. Reserve $10,000. Estimate (open).
