Graded EX 5 by PSA. Extraordinary high-grade example of #30 Ty Cobb from the classic 1914 Cracker Jack series. This is a particularly stunning card! We are very familiar with this particular card as this is the second time we have had the privilege of offering this superb gem. This card originally appeared as lot #8 in REA's Spring 2018 auction (realizing $48,000), and has been consigned to this auction directly from the purchaser at that sale. It is rare to find any 1914 Cracker Jack in such high grade, let alone an example of a key Hall of Famer like Ty Cobb. This card is universally recognized as one of card collecting's great classics, and one of Ty Cobb's most desirable and striking cards. 1914 Cracker Jacks are naturally much more difficult to find in high grade than their 1915 counterparts because the 1914 #144 series cards were issued only in boxes of Cracker Jack, while the 1915 set could be obtained as a factory set directly from the company by mail. Cobb is featured on this card in a batting pose set against a deep red background. Bright and crisp, both front and back, without a single trace of caramel staining, which so frequently plagues 1914 #144 series Cracker Jack cards. The card possesses outstanding color, an extremely bold red background, and four strong corners. Centered very slightly to the left. This is a very rarely offered high-grade example of the most important of all Cracker Jack or Ty Cobb cards, and one that would be a significant highlight in any world-class collection of 1914 Cracker Jack, Ty Cobb, or classic vintage baseball cards. Reserve $10,000. Estimate $20,000++.
