In 1934 the Goudey Gum Company began a sales promotion consisting of the establishment of a youth organization, called the Knot Hole League, which featured Lou Gehrig as the spokesman and president of the club. Membership in the club made youngsters eligible for prizes, which could be obtained only by the redemption of gum wrappers from the company's baseball-card issues. Offered here is a collection of six items relating to the Knot Hole League, including a standard membership kit, all of which have been mounted together in an attractive framed display. 1) 9 x 12-inch Goudey advertising flyer sent to retailers explaining the benefits of the Knot Hole League with regard to sales. The flyer features a portrait image of Gehrig and provides a perforated order card at the base that was to be returned to Goudey (order card no longer present). Without reference to the detached order card, the flyer is in Excellent condition, with two horizontal mailing folds and staple holes along the top (as issued). 2) 1934 Big League Chewing Gum Wrapper featuring information on joining the Knot Hole League (Good condition; approximately 4.25 x 6 inches). 3-6) Knot Hole League membership kit, composed of the following four items: membership card issued to Leon F. DeVillez (4.25 x 2.75 inches; Ex); Knot Hole League felt patch (3.25 inches in diameter; Nr-Mt); Knot Hole League fold-out brochure, which outlines the Club's goals and benefits and also pictures the prizes which were available from the company, including the R309 standup premiums (3.25 x 6 inches, folded; Vg-Ex); and original mailing envelope, addressed to Leon F. DeVillez (6.25 x 4 inches; Vg). Total: 6 items mounted in a framed display. Total dimensions: 21.5 x 24 inches. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
