Presented is an exceptional Goudey copyright submission card and matched registration card for #181 Babe Ruth from the 1933 R319 Goudey set. This is the very card submitted by the Goudey Gum Company for recording and copyrighting purposes to the United States Copyright Office in Washington, D.C. Two examples of each card were required to be submitted to the U. S. Copyright Office by Goudey. One example of each card was returned to Goudey, the other kept by the government for its files (since destroyed). Goudey's original copyright file cards were discovered in The Great Goudey Find of 1969, when Goudey's files were discovered and sold by collector John Fawcett. The copyright cards, which collectors often for convenience refer to as "patent cards," were included in the find and at that time were dispersed to the four corners of the collecting world. Occasionally examples surface, but all can be traced back to files of Goudey and their sale in 1969. Each card has copyright-related ink stampings on reverse. The date stamped on the reverse of the Ruth records that this card was received in the United States Copyright Office on September 13, 1933. This date of receipt is verified by the accompanying copyright registration card, which also notes that the date of publication of this card was September 1, 1933. Goudey copyright cards often have some condition problems, related to their use as well as to the fact that all Goudey copyright cards were handcut from sheets by Goudey, but the offered example of Ruth is crisp, clean, and neatly cut with an overall Ex-Mt appearance. Encapsulated as "Authentic" by PSA. The copyright registration card is in Excellent to Mint condition and encapsulated by PSA. Total: 2 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate (open).
