1902-1911 W600 Sporting Life Cabinet Ty Cobb Rookie

Sold For: $300,000
Year: 1907
Auction: 2020 Spring
Lot #: 1
Auction: Prewar Baseball - Early 1900s Cards
Presented is one of the most significant cards we have ever had the privilege of offering: a superb example of Ty Cobb's true rookie card from the highly regarded W600 Sporting Life cabinet set. While W600 Sporting Life cabinets were issued over a period of many years (1902-1911), Ty Cobb was issued in 1907, his rookie year, and holds the distinction as one of the single most important cards within this landmark set. This is a stunning example of one of the rarest and most majestic of all Ty Cobb cards. Consigned by a long-time collector-dealer who acquired this card nearly thirty years ago, it has quietly been in his personal collection for all that time. In our experience, Cobb is also one of the rarest of all W600 Hall of Famers. We have offered only one other example in the last twenty years, and we have seen only two other examples at public auction during that same period. PSA and SGC have combined to grade only six examples of Cobb from more than 530 W600 cabinets evaluated at date. W600 Sporting Life cabinet cards have always been held in the highest esteem by advanced collectors and are universally recognized as among the most substantial, highest-quality baseball-card sets ever issued. The image of Cobb used on the W600s is all the more noteworthy as it features the same pose as the popular T206 portrait cards (both red and green backgrounds). Graded GOOD 2 by PSA (submitted by REA). Do not be fooled by the PSA grade! This is a gorgeous card! This card has been downgraded solely due to a lower right corner chip. Bright, fresh, and clean, with slight even corner wear (aside from the previously mentioned lower right), no creases, and a very light stain in the middle of the right edge. The blank reverse is clean (a small brown mark in the lower left mentioned for accuracy). It is otherwise in Vg-Ex+ condition. This is an exceptionally attractive example of one of Ty Cobb's rarest and most striking cards, and on that would be a significant addition to any serious Hall of Fame or rookie-card collection. Reserve $50,000. Estimate (open).
