1935 R321 Goudey "4-in-1" Babe Ruth SGC EX 60

Sold For: $5,160
Year: 1935
Auction: 2022 June
Lot #: 6
Auction: Prewar Baseball - 1930s and 1940s Cards
Graded EX 60 by SGC. Presented is a very attractive example of the key card from the 1935 Goudey “4-in-1” set featuring Babe Ruth on his final card issued during his playing days. The 1935 Goudey cards are particularly hard to find in high grade. The colored flush-to-the-border design makes them very susceptible to edge and corner wear. This card displays bright colors, a crisp image of Ruth, centering slightly toward the right, and light corner wear. Clean reverse. The 1935 Goudey of Ruth is a fascinating card. While Ruth is identified with the Boston Braves, Goudey actually used and cropped the Yankees dugout pose image of Ruth’s card #181 from the 1933 Goudey series. The three other players who appear on the card are McManus, Brandt, and fellow Hall of Famer Rabbit Maranville. The puzzle section on the reverse is “Picture 1 Card J.” This is an outstanding example of one of Babe Ruth’s most overlooked but significant cards. Reserve $10.
