1914 Baltimore News SGC-Graded Collection (13) - Babe Ruth Museum Provenance!

Sold For: Reserve Not Met
Year: 1914
Auction: 2023 Fall
Lot #: 3
Auction: Prewar Baseball - 1910s and 1920s Cards
There is a common theme that runs through each of the three lots of Baltimore News cards featured in this auction: Their rarity is so extreme that even a single example can be hard to come by in any form. It should come as no surprise then that the offered lot of thirteen cards from this set is a unicorn. These thirteen cards represent the largest single assembly of Baltimore News cards ever offered together and would instantly crown the winning bidder as the owner of the one of the largest collections of these rare cards in the world. These cards represent thirteen of the twenty-one non-Babe Ruth Baltimore News cards ever authenticated by SGC (PSA has graded only one card). Kept together in the same Baltimore-area family since the year of issue, these cards were prominently displayed at the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum in Baltimore alongside the Babe Ruth rookie card and the Jack Dunn example offered in the preceding lots. Cards from this set were issued in both red and blue variations, with player images in either red and white or blue and white. Nine red examples and four blue examples are included in this collection. Each card measures approximately 2-5/8 x 3-5/8 inches. The reverse has home and abroad schedules for the Baltimore team during its 1914 season. SGC Grading Composite: Four VG/EX 4: Neal Ball, Albert Davidson, Gus Gleichmann, and George Twombley. Five VG 3: Dave Danforth, Claud Derrick, Ben Eagan, Ezra Midkiff, and Allen Russell. Two GOOD+ 2.5: Ensign Cottrell and Hack Simmons. Two GOOD 2: Birdie Cree and Bert Daniels. In addition to the extreme rarity of these cards, their condition is exceptional as well. This is an instant collection of some of the world's rarest trading cards, made even more special by their enduring connection to Babe Ruth and their remarkable provenance. Total: 13 cards. Opening Bid $50,000.
