Graded VG/EX 4 by SGC. Very striking 1887 N172 Old Judge example of Detroit Wolverines Hall of Famer Sam Thompson (pose #456-1) with an elaborate studio background. In 1887 Thompson led the National League with 545 at-bats, 203 hits, 23 triples, 166 RBI (the highest RBI total in the nineteenth century), a .372 batting average, and a .571 slugging percentage. This card is bright, crisp, and clean, with strong corners and superb contrast and image quality. Downgraded due to minor toning along the bottom edge on the blank reverse. Collectors place much more significance on the strength of the image (which is outstanding in this case) than the technical grade. A tremendous N172 example of Sam Thompson worthy of any N172, Hall of Fame, or nineteenth-century card collection. Opening Bid $10.
