1907 Wolverine News Postcard Ty Cobb Portrait Rookie SGC FAIR 1.5

Sold For: $29,400
Year: 1907
Auction: 2024 May
Lot #: 2
Auction: Prewar Baseball - Early 1900s Cards
Graded FAIR 1.5 by SGC. Extremely rare example of Ty Cobb's "portrait" pose variation card from the highly regarded Wolverine News Detroit Tigers postcard set, issued in 1907. This issue was produced by the Wolverine News Company of Detroit to commemorate the Tigers' participation in the 1907 World Series. This card represents one of Cobb's true rookie cards, and from within that pool, it remains one of his rarest. To date, only seventeen examples (including the offered card) have been authenticated by SGC and PSA combined (PSA has certified seven). Bright and crisp with honest corner wear (weaker bottom two). The card has been addressed and mailed, with the postmark bearing the date “NOV 23 1908." A pair of unobtrusive creases and a small stain along Cobb's neck contribute to the assigned grade. The Wolverine News postcard represents an outstanding overlooked value compared to most other early Cobb cards, including those issued a couple of years later that are widely recognized by many collectors as Cobb's rookie cards. This is only the fourth example (portrait pose) of this exceptionally rare postcard that we have offered in the past 20 years! A remarkable surviving example of one of Cobb's most elusive early cards and one that qualifies as one of his true rookie cards. Opening Bid $10.
