Graded VG 3 by PSA. One of only three examples graded at this level by PSA with none higher. Tremendous example of Ty Cobb's "portrait" pose variation card from the highly regarded Wolverine News Detroit Tigers postcard set, issued in 1907. This issue was produced by the Wolverine News Company of Detroit to commemorate the Tigers' participation in the 1907 World Series. This card represents one of Cobb's true rookie cards, and from within that pool, it remains one of his rarest. To date, only seventeen examples (including the offered card) have been authenticated by SGC and PSA combined (SGC has certified ten). Bright and crisp with some modest corner and edge wear. The card, which has not been addressed and mailed, displays a few light stains on the reverse. The Wolverine News postcard represents an outstanding overlooked value compared to most other early Cobb cards, including those issued a couple of years later that are widely recognized by many collectors as Cobb's rookie cards. This is only the fifth example (portrait pose) of this exceptionally rare postcard that we have offered in the past 20 years!
