Within the card-collecting hobby, there exists for every player an iconic card (or cards) that immediately comes to mind when that player is brought up in conversation. For Lou Gehrig, the 1933 R319 Goudey #92 is one of those cards. Depicting Gehrig in a batting stance set against a striking blue background, this card is not only one of the key cards to the set but also an integral piece of any Gehrig, gum-card, or Top 250 Sportscards collection. Any example of this card is iconic and highly desirable, regardless of condition, but few examples are ever able to reach an even more exalted status - a combination of incredible stature, supreme rarity, and breathtaking beauty. Presented here is one such example: a stunning, signed 1933 Goudey #92 Lou Gehrig. Autographed by the "Iron Horse" across the front in black fountain pen, this is one of only ten signed #92 examples recorded on the PSA Population Report. The signature, which is remarkable in every way, has been graded MINT 9 by PSA/DNA. While the Population Report does not offer a breakdown of the signature grades assigned to each of the ten examples (or to any signed card, for that matter), based on a review of prior sales data, conversations with longtime hobbyists, and decades of experience within REA, we feel comfortable presenting the offered example as the highest-graded signature in existence for this Lou Gehrig classic. If a GEM MINT 10 signature exists, we would welcome the opportunity to see it as it could only reinforce the strength of the signature, which contrasts beautifully against the white background of Gehrig's New York Yankees uniform. In addition to the tremendous preservation of the signature, the card itself presents exceptionally well, boasting bright colors, a crisp image, outstanding centering, and balanced wear at the corners. We grade this card Very Good overall but cannot stress enough how the combination of an attractive card and a striking signature make for an awe-inducing collectible. Gehrig-signed baseball cards are scarce; we have sold only nine other different cards (from any issue) signed by Gehrig in the last twenty-five years. This is a remarkable surviving example, in ideal condition, of one of signed-card collecting's most desirable combinations: a beautiful Lou Gehrig signature on his iconic 1933 Goudey #92 card! It would be a welcomed addition to any world-class collection. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. Opening Bid $75,000.
