1914 E145 Cracker Jack #103 Joe Jackson SGC GOOD+ 2.5

Sold For: $102,000
Year: 1914
Auction: 2024 Summer
Lot #: 10
Auction: Prewar Baseball - E Candy Cards
Graded GOOD+ 2.5 by SGC. Outstanding example of the 1914 Cracker Jack #103 Joe Jackson. Do not be fooled by the modest technical grade! For a card assigned a grade of "Good+" this example is in tremendous condition and is extraordinary in all respects. The impressive quality of the card speaks for itself and is far superior to most (if not all) other 1914 Cracker Jacks grading at this level. Also of note: Looking at the population reports for both PSA and SGC, we could not help but be struck by how few 1914 Joe Jackson Cracker Jack cards have ever been graded. The total (and this number almost certainly overstates the true number of examples, due to regrading and switching holders from one company to another without retiring labels) is only seventy-one cards (46 PSA and 25 by SGC). 1914 Cracker Jacks are naturally much more difficult to find in high grade than their 1915 counterparts because the 1914 #144 series cards were only issued in boxes of Cracker Jack, while the 1915 cards could be obtained as a factory set directly from the company by mail. The 1914 Cracker Jack is one of the most sought-after of all Joe Jackson cards. Jackson is featured on this card in a batting pose based on a photograph by legendary photographer Charles Conlon, set against a deep red background. The card is bright and crisp, both front and back, with light, even wear on the corners, extremely bold colors, and just a few extremely small, insignificant, and unobtrusive light creases (which are not easily seen from the front, and can be most easily located by studying the reverse). Centered just slightly to the left (approximately 40/60 left to right), with a slight picture tilt that is characteristic of this card. 1914 Cracker Jacks, of course, are almost always found with serious caramel staining. This card has some light stains of little or no consequence, far less so than typically found on this card, and mostly visible only on the reverse. The red background is particularly bright and bold, which naturally contributes to the card's outstanding visual appeal. This is a very strong and striking example of one of collecting's most famous icons, and one that would be a highlight in any world-class collection of Cracker Jack, Joe Jackson, or classic vintage baseball cards. Opening Bid $20,000.
